Mother Arrested After Girl Drowns in Swimming Pool
DENVER—The mother of a 7-year-old girl who drowned in a swimming pool at an apartment complex in Arapahoe County has been arrested on suspicion of child abuse resulting in death.
The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office says 27-year-old Eve Gbeugre was taken into custody after investigators determined the child got access to the pool when she was left alone in the residence for an undisclosed amount of time.
No attorney for the mother was listed in court records.
The sheriff’s office says deputies were called to the apartment complex on Thursday evening after someone pulled the girl from the pool.
Investigators say the girl was apparently unsupervised while she was in the pool.
On Monday, two girls and their baby sitter died in swimming pool at a mobile home trailer park.
Arrest documents said that she left the girl alone for an hour because she “was not listening to her,” The Denver Post reported. Gbeugre said that she “needed to step away” from the girl, who apparently didn’t know how to swim and who later died.
A resident saw the child face down in the center of the pool at around 6 p.m. local time.
“Investigators believe the child was able to gain access to the pool area when she was left alone in the residence for an undisclosed amount of time,” the county sheriff’s office said in a statement. “It does not appear any adults were present at the time,” the sheriff’s office added.
