QUIZ: Can you name Man United’s most successful European sides?

Man United get their Europa League career underway with a trip to Feyenoord on Thursday night and, whilst they might not exactly want to be playing on Thursday nights the Red Devils are a club steeped in European history, and Jose Mourinho will not want that to change this season.

The red side of Manchester have won Europe’s top competition on three occasions, 1968, 1999 and, most recently in 2008 when they beat Premier League rivals, Chelsea on penalties in Moscow.

Although a win over rivals from your own country is a sweet victory, however, the 1998-99 Champions League win will forever be United’s greatest. Having finished second in the league the season before, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side began their season in the qualifying rounds of the biggest competition in club football.

The season would be a long one, but one to remember as, after going toe-to-toe with Arsenal on home soil, they won both the FA Cup and the league title, the domestic double. Having already made history, the newly crowned English champions had the chance to go on and do something that no British club had ever done, or has done since, win a European treble with the Champions League final against Bayern Munich, the rest is history.

A successful European campaign is something that stays with players and fans for a lifetime, with iconic games, goals and sides etching themselves into this history of a club, the treble winning United side are considered immortals at Old Trafford, but can you name each side that got them to the final in Barcelona, and eventually won it.
